New Ways Organization’s Food Security Activities in Somalia:
The humanitarian support provided by New Ways Organization is aimed at saving lives of the most vulnerable populations affected by shocks. It also aims at transforming the lives of vulnerable households through provision of life-saving food security and socio-economic empowerment. In doing so New Ways focusses on the following two approaches/ models in supporting food insecure households:
1.Provision of food via food voucher or CBT
In this short-term approach food is provided to people in emergencies resulting either from natural or man-made disasters. Outbreak of severe drought often led to hunger or even to starvation to communities in the affected areas. Riverine communities living in flood prone areas are not only displaced during floods but also their crops get destroyed thus making them food insecure. Other natural disaster that contributes to communities’ food insecurity is the outbreak of locust infestation. Rural pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in Lower Shabelle Region lost their crops to the locust infestation last year leaving tens of thousands of households depending on relief food. Armed conflicts also contribute to displacement of communities making them dependent on relief food.
New Ways Organization has been providing relief food via food voucher to 9724 drought affected households in Afgoye and Wanlaweyn districts of Lower Shabelle Region since the beginning of 2022. Households benefitting from this program have been receiving monthly entitlement of US$40 via food voucher. New Ways has also been supporting 9859 locust affected food insecure households in Afgoye, Barawe, Qoryoley and Wanlaweyn districts of Lower Shabelle Region via Cash Based Transfer (CBT) since the beginning of 2022. These households have been receiving US$60 per month via CBT.
1, Provision of food for Asset/training
To help food insecure populations withstand shocks throughout the year, New Ways Organization employs strategies that will have both short term and long-term positive impacts. Under this strategy, affected communities are encouraged to rehabilitate their community assets such as irrigation infrastructure (canals) roads, water catchments etc, and in turn receive monthly household food for a period of four months. Only most vulnerable food insecure households are selected for the exercise.
Under this approach, unskilled male and female youths from IDP and poor host communities living in urban areas are provided with vocational skill training to help them secure available employments in the labour market. Trainees are entitled to US$60 via voucher for training per month during the entire training period.
The food/vouchers provided to these vulnerable groups during the implementation period help households meet their short-term food demand while the assets rehabilitated or skill trainings provided will contribute to the long-term food security of households and communities. The organization rehabilitated a total of 18 secondary canals, 4 feeder roads and 2 water catchments via Food for Asset (FFA) since 2013. It also furnished employable skills to over 3500 unskilled youths via Voucher for Training (VFT) since 2015. Trainings were conducted in New Ways’ vocational training centres in Mogadishu (Banadir Region, Afgoye and Barawe (Lower Shabelle Region). Over 80% of these youths are currently either self-employed or secured jobs in the labour markets in Mogadishu, Afgoye, Barawe and other big towns in Somalia. The other group that benefited New Ways skill trainings were the flood affected Afgoye vegetable farmers who were empowered with modern vegetable farming skills. The 400 farmers who benefited from this program today supply vegetables to Afgoye District markets and parts of Mogadishu.
