Education Background

We're Working to Ensure All Children Can Learn, Achieve, and Thrive in Safe Schools with Quality Teaching

Many areas across Somalia, parents cannot fund their children’s education. In addition to poverty, long distances to school, safety concerns, social norms favouring boys’ education, and lack of teachers, particularly female teachers, and the low availability of sanitation facilities, stop parents from enrolling children, particularly girls, in school. Children living with disabilities face even more difficulties accessing quality relevant education.  The recurrent natural disasters also continue to displace children and families, making it very difficult for them to continue schooling.

Major barriers to increasing access to quality education in Somalia include the cost of education and the limited ability of community/public schools to expand enrolment without financial support; the historic exclusion of girls and subgroups of children (pastoralists, with disabilities, internally displaced/ IDPs, minorities) from education; high student/teacher ratio; low ratio of textbooks to students; limited capacity for participatory school governance; limited number of qualified teachers; limited provision of and capacity to deliver in-service teacher training responsive to learning gaps; and inadequate school infrastructure.

New ways organization education thematic priorities: is  Improved access to relevant & equitable basic education services

New ways organization is currently implementing education project Jointly with MOE Galmudug state supported by UNICEF and funded by German federation (KFW).  The overall project objective is to increase access to quality and relevant education for all children in the 51 targeted schools.
