Food Security is more than just providing a meal today — it is about ensuring that every individual and household has reliable, sufficient, safe and nutritious food now and in the future, even in the face of shocks. In the Horn of Africa context, where climate variability, conflict and economic pressures converge, this programme is vital.
Our approach includes:

  • Supporting small-scale farmers with climate-smart agriculture training (soil conservation, drought-resistant crops, efficient water use).
  • Promoting community-based food banks or grain-banks to buffer periods of scarcity.
  • Strengthening market access, supply-chains and value-addition so that food production translates into income, not just subsistence.
  • Working on nutrition-sensitive agriculture so that food is not only available but also nutritious (micronutrient rich, culturally acceptable).
  • Facilitating preparedness for shocks: early-warning systems, contingency planning, community rapid-response mechanisms.
  • In the words of a community farmer: “When I plant it rains less, but the techniques I learned help me use the water better.”

When a household knows their next meal is secure, children can go to school, caregivers can invest in livelihoods, and families can plan ahead instead of just surviving day-to-day. That stability creates a ripple effect through health, education and participation.
